AUBUCHON: THE STILL PHOTOGRAPHY CHOREOGRAPHER
Out of context, dancers in natural venues, away from predictable stage situations, they romp and frolic or project their inner selves in intimate visions of other worlds. This time, Raleigh photographer Stephen Aubuchon takes his dancers out of the studio to create his own choreographed photographs for a new exhibit of his work opening at Adam Cave Fine Art on Friday, October 17th. Aubuchon is well known in North Carolina photography and dance circles for his stunning dancers in motion.
The long sleeve series features a single dancer wearing a clinging costume with 30 foot trailing sleeves prancing and dancing, jumping and swirling amid a mystically natural sand and sky setting. She seems to be taking off like a plane or sailing through the clouds or whirling into nowhere always with her elongated sleeves trailing like ribbons behind her, under her and around her.
The white dress collection is a psychologically revealing series built around a single model engaged with a vintage stone staircase. Through her body language she projects sensitive moods and feelings. In one horizontal frame, she appears to be coming and going, a young girl looking back at herself with new confidence. In others, the viewer sees her in the corner of the composition ascending the staircase to her future, or caught up in moving forward through a grassy field. She appears to be racing away from the light (us) into the security of the trees.
Stephen Aubuchon began as a commercial photographer but quickly turned to fine art. His work has been shown at the North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina State University and at the Durham Art Guild.
In addition to these Aubuchon photographs, the exhibit is introducing several new glass artists work to the gallery. Adam Cave fine Art is located at 115 Hargett Street on the second floor of an historic building in downtown Raleigh.
