Born in Szeged, Hungary, William Andrew Pogány first pursued engineering in Budapest before turning to art. He studied in Budapest, Munich and Paris before moving to London in 1905. After a decade he moved to New York where he successfully worked as a book illustrator and designer of stage sets and hotel interiors.
