Combining abstract color-field painting with realist still-life and nature elements has been the focus of Chicago artist Byron Gin for many years now. In his newest body of work, Gin creates backgrounds full of color and texture. The history of the paint, layer upon layer, is visible in each piece, and reminiscent of the peeling paint, plaster, and paper one finds on the walls of old buildings. The birds and objects that populate these paintings are sometimes not fully painted, and seem to appear out of the paint like old stickers, signs, or graffiti. However, Gin has painted these elements with even more detail than ever before, creating striking contrasts that bring each piece to life. Through May 26th.
