FLOTSAM: new works by Jimmy Craig Womble II October 3 - November 4, 2013 Preview Party with the artist Thursday, October 3rd, 6-8 pm First Friday Reception with the artist Friday, October 4th, 6-9 pm The Impressionists were obsessed with painting light. North Carolina painter Jimmy Craig Womble II is trying something even harder; painting air. His successful efforts will be on view in FLOTSAM an exhibit of new work opening October 3rd at Adam Cave Fine Art in Raleigh. Womble's images of Eastern North Carolina are thick with the region's unique atmosphere. The surfaces of these paintings allow us to feel the heat, humidity, mist and moisture; all of it lit with warm Southern sunlight. Ironically, the warmth and familiarity of feeling in these paintings belies their actual subject matter; places we rarely seek out and often avoid. The artist is fascinated with overlooked, rundown buildings, rusty old vehicles, and all manner of un-manicured life in the state. Most of his paintings are begun on site and finished in the studio. Womble sees the rust and decay as physical reminders of the passage of time but also chooses these subjects for a certain beauty he sees in them. "The light falling over these old objects and places has an intensity and sparkle that is endlessly fascinating to me. There will always be new things, but how long will I continue to be able to paint those reminders of what used to be?" Jimmy Craig was born and raised in Rocky Mount and studied art at the School of Design at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, graduating in 1995. He moved to Morehead city in 2005 where he lives with his wife and two children. He was the recipient of a regional artists grant in 2006 and has works in the collections of the Duke Cancer Center, NC State University, The Goodwill Foundation, and the City of Rocky Mount, NC.
